Why it matters

Readability is a ranking factor by proxy

Google does not score your prose directly. It scores what people do when they arrive — and hard-going writing sends them back to the results page, which is a signal search engines act on.

  • Clearer content gets read for longerTime on page is a quality signal. Simple, well-structured writing keeps people there.
  • Short sentences convert betterService pages need punchy, scannable copy. Long paragraphs lose customers who were ready to buy.
  • Reading level mattersMost UK adults read comfortably at around age 12 to 14. Writing above that narrows your audience for no benefit.
  • Word count affects rankings, up to a pointThin pages under 300 words rarely rank. But padding is worse than being concise — quality always wins.

What to do with each score

  • 1 · Check the word count firstBlog posts typically need 800 to 1,500 words to rank well. Service pages can work at 500 to 800 if the content is focused and useful.
  • 2 · Look at the reading levelAim for a Flesch Reading Ease score above 60 — higher is easier. Below 50 usually means your sentences are too long or your vocabulary too complex.
  • 3 · Break up long sentencesAnything over 25 words is hard to follow. Split it. Your readers and Google will both thank you.
  • 4 · Cut the padding“In order to” becomes “to”. “At this point in time” becomes “now”. Tighter writing is clearer writing.
  • 5 · Read it aloudIf you stumble over your own content, your visitors will too. The checker flags the measurable problems; your ear catches the tone.
  • 6 · Get help if writing is not your strengthOur blog and copywriting service produces clear, SEO-focused content written by people. Blog posts from £45, service page copy from £55.
