How local SEO actually works for a UK service business
You can be the best plumber in Preston and still never get the call, because somebody else turned up in the map pack and you did not. Here is what decides that, in the order it matters, and how much of it you can do yourself.
Clicks collapse fast below the top
Sistrix analysed more than 80 million keywords and found the first organic result takes around 28.5% of clicks, the second about 15.7%, and the tenth roughly 2.5%. Position one gets more than ten times the clicks of position ten.
Two caveats we would want stated if somebody quoted this at us. That study is from 2020 and measured mobile results only. And since then AI Overviews, featured snippets and the local pack have pushed the classic blue links further down the page, so the real numbers today are softer and vary enormously by query. Your own Search Console data beats any published curve.
The underlying point survives all of that: attention concentrates hard at the top, and for local service searches the map pack sits above everything. That is the thing worth competing for.
Your Google Business Profile
For a lot of local searches this is the only thing a customer looks at before deciding who to ring. It is also free, entirely within your control, and the single highest-return hour you can spend.
- List every service properlyNot “builder”. Kitchen fitting, loft conversions, plastering, each one separately. People search for the specific thing.
- Real photographsActual jobs, your van, your team. Not just a logo. Profiles with real photos get chosen over ones without.
- Set your service areasWhere you work, not where your office is. These are different for most trades and Google cannot guess.
- Match your details everywhereName, address and phone identical on your site, your profile, and every directory you are listed in.
- Reply to reviewsEven a one-line thank you. It shows the business is alive, to Google and to whoever is reading.
A page for each place you actually work
If you want to appear for a town, you need a page that is genuinely about that town. Fifteen place names scattered across one page ranks for none of them.
What makes these pages work, and what makes them fail, is the same thing: whether they contain anything real. A page that names local areas, mentions the kind of jobs you do there, and carries a review from someone in that town will hold up. A template with the place name swapped is obvious to Google and to readers, and it can drag the rest of the site down with it.
Write as much as the page needs and no more. There is no target word count, whatever you have been told — a short page with genuine local detail beats a padded one every time. Navigation issues that hurt small business SEO covers how to link these pages so they do not end up stranded.
The two unglamorous ones
- Ask every satisfied customerMake it part of finishing the job rather than something you get round to. If the review mentions what you did and where, better still. One a month keeps the profile looking current — a business whose last review predates the pandemic reads as one that may have closed.
- Get your NAP identical everywhereName, address, phone. Your site, your profile, Yell, Checkatrade, Rated People, Facebook, and the directories you have forgotten you are on. Conflicting details make Google uncertain which version to trust, and uncertainty costs visibility. It is dull and it works.
Four things that quietly cost you
- Living on directories instead of your own siteA Checkatrade or Yell listing is fine as part of the mix. But every enquiry through them builds their authority, not yours, and you are renting a window in someone else’s shop. Your own site is the only asset you keep.
- A one-page websiteOne page is one chance to rank. You need a page per service and a page per area, or Google has almost nothing to work with.
- Stale reviewsCovered above, and it is the most common single problem we see.
- Ignoring the technical sideSlow loading, broken links, pages Google cannot reach, layouts that fall apart on a phone. You can write beautifully and none of it will matter. Our broken link checker and health score checker will find most of it in a couple of minutes.
What to do first if you only have a weekend
- One: the Google Business ProfileFree, fast, and the biggest single lever for a local service business. Do this before anything else.
- Two: fix what is brokenBroken links, unreachable pages, anything failing on mobile. Clear the blockers before adding anything new.
- Three: make the details consistentNAP across your site, profile and the main directories.
- Four: one proper page per area you serveThis is the part that takes real time, so it comes after the quick wins.
- Five: reviews, continuouslyNot a task, a habit.
Doing the first three properly is a weekend’s work and costs nothing but your time. Plenty of businesses never do them.
What it looks like done properly
Paramount Space Cleaning in Coventry came to us in October 2025 with no local visibility at all. Seven months later they hold position one for “deep cleaning coventry”, rank on page one for 55 search terms, and traced a £7,000 commercial contract back to organic search.
The caveat we attach to everything: one business, one city, one sector that is competitive but not brutal. Not a forecast for anybody else, and we will tell you honestly which category you are in before you commit. Nora approved every figure before we published it.
Simon & Lisa Batchelor run Get Your Website Seen. Simon spent ten years as owner and editor of a magazine, then built and sold Commerce Computers Ltd, a trade computer supplier that traded online as shop4it.co.uk. So we have been on the buying side of marketing that did not work, which is most of why this site reads the way it does. You deal with us directly, and every figure published here belongs to a client who approved it.
